Drew Schuyler, Untermyer Gardens Conservancy
Drew will share an exclusive update to the Metro Hort community on the restoration and maintenance of historic Untermyer Gardens in Yonkers, NY. Untermyer Gardens Conservancy was founded in 2011, and as the restoration project enters its “teenage” years with a staff of 10 horticulturists, the “before” times feel more distant. From the gardener’s POV, this talk will explore the guiding principles of the restored areas, tell of challenges encountered along the way, and profile the recent and future happenings in this 45-acre public garden just outside NYC. untermyergardens.org

Drew Schuyler is a Yonkers native who grew up near Untermyer and has been involved with the restoration of its grounds in different capacities since 2012. He received a certificate in GIS from Binghamton University and worked in restoration ecology with the National Park Service before graduating from Longwood Gardens’ Professional Horticulture program in 2015. He trained further at Vallarta Botanical Gardens in Mexico and Great Dixter in England before returning to Untermyer full-time, where he currently serves as Assistant Head Gardener. He also gardens freelance at the residential properties of Marco Polo Stufano, Margaret Roach, and other private clients. He currently lives in the Bronx with his partner, Burr Johnson, and two cats, Biscuit and Percy.
