Start Date: Winter 2025 Compensation: $30-38/hour
We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated, hard-working individuals who are interested in maintaining green roofs and rooftop gardens. The Senior Gardener will oversee and maintain a variety of maintenance sites throughout the New York City metro area and report to the Maintenance Director. Interested individuals should be able to use public transportation and/or provide their own transportation and must have a flexible schedule from Monday-Friday 8-6pm. 5+ years experience with plants, plant identification, soils, fertilizer, irrigation, and landscaping is a must. Experience with pest and disease identification and management is preferred. Candidates must be able to lift 50 lbs and work in all weather conditions. 40 hour OSHA certification is required. The Senior Gardener will be expected to correspond with clients directly for scheduling and changes to the gardens with support from the Maintenance Director. Candidates must be proficient in Adobe Acrobat, Excel, and Google Drive.
Responsibilities/Duties
Seasonal Responsibilities Include:
- Maintaining sites to client standards and standards upheld in the maintenance agreement
- Prune trees, shrubs, and perennials for health and form
- Weed all undesirable plants
- Deadhead flowers as needed and where appropriate
- Maintain proper spacing between plantings
- Remove and resize plantings as needed
- Pest and disease management
- Identify and treat with support from the Maintenance Director
- Debris removal and trash disposal
- Schedule site visits directly with clients and manage weekly calendar
- Communicate needs and issues with clients with Maintenance Director support
- Identify, report, and coordinate site needs with the Maintenance Director
- Curate plant additions (specify species and quantity)
- Determine plant health needs and coordinate action
- Fertilizing
- Pesticide and Disease treatment applications
- Identify and order site specific inventory items with Maintenance Director support
- Providing professional horticulture care
- Pleasant and respectful interactions with clients
- Prepare monthly maintenance reports and submit to Maintenance Director
- Help train maintenance crew as needed
Off Season Responsibilities Include:
- Maintenance inventory and restocking
- Identify material needs for in-season maintenance duties
- Fertilizer, mulch, pest management products, tools, PPE
- Identify material needs for in-season maintenance duties
- Update maintenance services reporting template
- Update maintenance expense reporting spreadsheet
- Investigate 2025 expenses to identify potential cost savings
- Develop and update training/education materials for new maintenance crew members
- Help finalize maintenance proposals for 2026
- Help identify and coordinate site specific material and operational needs
Qualifications/Requirements
- 5+ years horticulture experience
- Valid drivers license
- Be able to lift over 40lbs
- Proficient in Google Suite (Drive, Mail, Sheets, Docs, Photos)
- Independent self manager able to work physically demanding days alone
- Ability to identify most plant pests/symptoms, diseases and deficiencies, and determine treatments
