Compensation: $30 - $38 per hour

The Senior Gardener is responsible for delivering quality gardening services offered by Jane Gil Gardens Inc. by performing the following duties. Travel is required to our service areas, primarily within but not limited to Long Island and the NYC metro area: Manhattan, Bronx, and Brooklyn.

Responsibilities/Duties

 Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Has a global understanding of client expectations, site requirements, and operational logistics.
  2. Communicates with vendors and clients as needed.
  3. Performs gardening tasks at the highest standards and be able to demonstrate an understanding of the aesthetic presentation of plants and garden design.
  4. Assists with installation, de-installation, demolition, and maintenance of garden areas reflective of the client and Company quality standards.
  5. Cares for and maintains local and ornamental plants, including in some cases tropical plants, vegetables, and herbs.
  6. Identifies plant species, insects, and diseases.
  7. Performs horticultural tasks such as planting, deadheading, weeding, mulching, pruning, and watering of display beds.
  8. Prunes shrubs and small trees using current arboriculture industry standards.
  9. Leaves job sites in pristine condition upon task completion.
  10. Operates and maintains hand-held power equipment such as blowers.
  11. Follows safety guidelines and manufacturer labels for the use of chemicals (fertilizer, pest control, and anti-desiccant spray) and the operation of equipment and tools.
  12. Loads and unloads materials from trucks.
  13. Bags and disposes of planting/maintenance debris and ensure a clean work area before leaving a site.
  14. Reports time and attendance promptly.
  15. Reports safety and operational needs to direct supervisor.
  16. Promptly completes required operational reports and tracking by utilizing designated resources.
  17. Performs job site planning and walkthroughs, ensuring the team is aware of all tasks to be completed and all materials and tools are available and accounted for at the beginning and end of each job.
  18. Participates in job performance reviews.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Two plus years of Ornamental Horticulture experience and hands-on training in urban gardens.
  • Degree or certification in horticultural or related field desired.
  • Valid NYS driver's license preferred.
  • Familiarity with local and ornamental plant species and plant identification skills.
  • Ability to walk, stand, kneel, bend, and engage in other dynamic movements for 4 hour intervals.
  • Punctual, dependable, and sociable with a positive attitude, fastidious attention to detail, and a love of gardening
  • Follow instructions and take initiative
  • Work independently as well as part of a team
  • Communicate professionally, effectively and promptly with coworkers
  • Presentable appearance.
  • Be flexible in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
  • Ability to proficiently communicate through email and utilize web-browsing and timekeeping software. 
  • Lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Work in various weather conditions and noise levels.
