Start Date: February 2025  Compensation: $27-33/hour

We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated, hard-working individual who is interested in maintaining green roofs and rooftop gardens. The seasonal Maintenance Gardener will maintain a variety of maintenance sites throughout Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens and report to the Maintenance Director. Interested individuals should be able to use public transportation and/or provide their own transportation and must have a flexible schedule from Monday-Friday 8-6pm. 3+ years experience with plants, plant identification, soils, fertilizer, irrigation, and landscaping is a must. Experience with pest and disease identification and management is preferred. Candidates must be able to lift 40 lbs and work in all weather conditions. The Gardener will be expected to correspond with the Maintenance Director for scheduling and changes to the gardens. Candidates must be proficient in Adobe Acrobat and Google Suite including but not limited to Mail, Sheets, Calendar, Photos and Drive.

Responsibilities/Duties

 

  • Maintaining sites to client standards and standards upheld in the Highview maintenance agreement with oversight and help from the Maintenance Director: 
    • Spring preparation: Perennial cutbacks, tree pruning, mulching, seasonal planting
    • Lawn care: mowing, edging/string trimming, seeding, and fertilization
    • Pruning of trees, shrubs, and perennials for health and form
    • Weeding 
    • Deadheading 
    • Maintain proper spacing between plantings
    • Remove and resize plantings as needed 
    • Pest and disease management
    • Handwatering and irrigation adjustments
    • Keep clean and tidy garden spaces, debris removal and trash disposal 
    • Winterization of plantings and irrigation systems
    • Identify, report, and coordinate in season site needs with the Maintenance Director to determine plant health needs and coordinate action:
      • Fertilizing
      • Pesticide and Disease treatment applications
      • Mulching
      • Seeding
      • Pruning and hedging

Qualifications/Requirements

  • 3 years experience in gardening, landscaping, or similar industry
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs
  • Effective and professional communication 
  • Plant identification: species level identification of common garden perennials, shrubs, and trees including invasive species and weeds 
  • Valid drivers license 
  • Proficient understanding of plant pests and disease
  • Proficient in Google Suite and Microsoft Office
