Start Date: March  Compensation: $18-25/hr

We are not your average design, build, and landscaping company. At Sprout, our mission is improving and diversifying our environment while keeping our carbon footprint to a minimum. We specialize in edible, sustainable and biodiverse gardens across Essex and Bergen Countries in New Jersey and Manhattan in NYC.

Traditional American landscape designs seldom prioritize the ecosystem. Sprout aims to protect a biodiverse fauna of butterflies, birds, bees, amphibians and bats. We create gardens and select plants with both aesthetics and biodiversity in mind. Sprout’s landscapes are more than just beautiful, personal garden spaces. By design, they support and enhance our clients’ personal ecosystem by creating habitats for vital insect and animal life. Our ecological ethic extends to our construction work: we use all-natural stone and source sustainably harvested wood as much as possible.  

We are looking for energetic, enthusiastic and motivated people with a passion for nature to help us build and maintain these outdoor spaces so that they can continue to support a balanced, thriving ecosystem. We are hiring for a seasonal Gardener for March-December 2025.

The ideal candidate for both roles is experienced, with the desire to learn and grow while working collaboratively and independently. The Gardener can expect onsite training at the beginning and end of the season but will be expected to work independently for the core season (April-August).

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Weeding
  • Plant Care (deadheading)
  • Using hand tools
  • Working outside in all conditions, including heat, light rain, and cold.
  • Traveling to client sites across Northern NJ and Manhattan.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • 3 years minimum professional experience in horticulture/gardening/construction or educational equivalent
  • Gardeners must have working knowledge of vegetable and ornamental plants
  • Must be able to lift more than 50lbs repeatedly throughout the day
  • Work in the heat of the summer, cold times in spring, fall and parts of winter and through light rain throughout the season
  • Possible Saturday work during the peak season
  • Valid Driver’s license
  • Personal transportation to and from jobsites throughout NJ and NY
  • Bilingual Spanish is a plus
