Compensation: $75,000-$85,000 per year
The purpose of the Landscape Operations Manager position is to direct and lead the Grounds and Horticulture staff through day-to-day operations, to facilitate work orders and follow up with service requests making sure they are completed in a satisfactory manner. A well-maintained campus landscape is vital to student recruitment and retention, day-to-day operations and enjoyment of Bard College.
Responsibilities/Duties
- Supervising and training the Grounds and Horticulture staff, schedule and organize work and work orders; instructing staff in the use of all required equipment
- Direct campus-wide horticultural design, landscape planning, installation, and maintenance
- Manage tree work, landscaping in formal and informal garden beds, greenhouses, leaf and snow removal, outdoor event preparation and set ups and plant health care
- Overseeing campus landscape, lawn care and related grounds work, excavation, the maintenance of roads and sidewalks, and parking areas; the removal of trash/recycling; event setups and deliveries
- Accountable to the College for all efficiency and productivity standards as established by the College; performing all specific duties in a diligent and professional manner
- Assisting other trades supervisors and managers for the harmonious and expeditious completion of specific assignments
- Reporting specific deficiencies and unsafe conditions in related Campus systems; and working in a safe and professional manner
- Maintain plant records & purchase orders for the acquisition and the inventory of materials required for the Grounds and Horticulture Departments
- Manage all aspects of the historic landscape
- Hire and oversee subcontractors and coordinate with other trade managers and professionals on new construction and maintenance
- Ability to work from blueprints, plans, and sketches
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Managing the Grounds Crew (12 employees), Horticulture (6 employees), Trash (2 employees), and student workers.
Qualifications/Requirements
- Physical ability and willingness to perform related work assigned
- 3-5 years of professional landscape management; college degree/certificate in related field
- Must be a high school graduate or equivalent, however additional education is preferred
- A minimum of five years of verifiable experience as a Landscape Operations Manager or related field
- Verifiable professional work experience in grounds work, pesticide application, safety practices, experience in all equipment required for grounds maintenance and snow removal
- Must have a valid NY State driver’s license and complete a college-sponsored defensive driver’s course
- Must maintain immunizations as required by the College
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Light and heavy equipment operation
- Lawn and Landscape maintenance care
- Snow removal operations and safety
- Event and furniture set ups/take downs
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Strong organizational and communication skills
Physical Demands
- Work in standard office environment
- Must be able to walk the grounds to supervise crew
- Must be able to occasionally lift 20 - 50 pounds and operate heavy machinery
- Must be able to work occasional weekends and evenings as needed
