Compensation: $24-$27.00 per hour

Salary Range: $24.00 – $27.00 / hour

The Irrigation Technician will report to the Director of Grounds and the Sports Field Manager and will work with other members of the department to maintain the surfaces of the athletic playing fields, both natural sod. and artificial turf. The Irrigation Technician will oversee and perform maintenance of all irrigation systems and assist in other turf maintenance practices, as needed throughout the park.
Responsibilities/Duties
- Design, install, and maintain all components related to irrigation systems, including traditional and two-wire path systems
- Troubleshoot and repair problems with irrigation systems
- Irrigate all grounds as scheduled or needed by hand watering or using the Rain Bird Site Control program
- Perform irrigation winterization to all systems
- Organize, complete inventory, and maintain records of irrigation equipment. Work with the Randall’s Island Sports Field Department to assist with daily turf maintenance including, mowing, seeding, fertilizing, watering, leveling, laying sod, removing debris, and rolling
- Assist with a variety of projects which can include aeration, aeravating, hydro-seeding, drainage, and maintenance building renovation
- Operate hand tools such as pole saws, loppers, hand saws, rakes, tampers, and shovels
- Operate small equipment such as walk- and riding- lawnmowers, weed whackers, hedge trimmers, and backpack leaf blowers
- Operate equipment such as motorized utility vehicles, pickup trucks and tractors
- Ensure all equipment is secure and well-maintained, including, washing, greasing, fueling, and arranging for service of equipment
- Perform other general tasks as assigned by the Director of Grounds and the Sports Field Manager

Qualifications/Requirements
- Three (3) years of hands-on experience in irrigation, plumbing or turf grass industry
- Willing to work outdoors in all types of weather, under strenuous conditions
- Ability to work weekends, holidays, and overtime, as needed
- Strong communication abilities
- Excellent planning and organizational skills, as well as strong attention to detail
- Ability to use light power equipment and hand tools
- Ability to perform physical labor; must be able to lift up to 50lbs
- Motivated and punctual, able to work both independently and as part of a team
- Ability to create and maintain positive working relationships
- Valid Driver License
PREFERRED SKILLS
- B.A. in turf grass management or related field or equivalent turf grass certificate/coursework
- Experience in golf course maintenance as an assistant, irrigation technician, or grounds crew member
- Experience working in a commercial setting
- Two (2) years of landscaping experience
- One (1) year of materials applications experience
