Horticulture Manager for Small Urban Gardens

(Paid Opportunities) Return to Paid Opportunities

Start Date: Late Winter 2025  Compensation: $45/ hour

Foras Studio is a boutique landscape design firm based in Brooklyn, New York.  We create simple, striking landscapes rooted in the architecture and existing tenor of the site. Our focus is on a detailed, thorough approach to landscape design, implementation and horticultural care. It is our belief that subtlety and simplicity of approach generate power and nuance in a space, and result in spaces that remain compelling as they change over time.

We are seeking a Professional Horticulturist to semi-autonomously manage 30-40 urban gardens and perform weekly and biweekly maintenance. The focus of the Horticultural Assistant will be to advance the horticultural vigor and longevity of our plantings as they mature so that each garden design reaches its full potential.

This is a great opportunity to grow with a small thriving landscape design business in NYC.

Responsibilities/Duties

  • This position involves the horticultural care and oversight of 3-5 urban gardens daily in Brooklyn and Manhattan on a rotating weekly/ biweekly schedule. Movement between sites is at your discretion (they are within walking distance of each other).
  • You will work 35+ hours each week but must be flexible due to weather conditions. We close the gardens late December and resume work late February.
  • You will report daily to the Head Horticulturist and document each gardens progress on our cloud-based database.
  • You will provide courteous and professional horticultural care for our clients and move discretely through their homes.
  • You will assist the Head Horticulturist with planning new garden installations, procuring plants from area nurseries, prepping the site and planting with a small team.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • It is necessary that you have a professional attitude, formal horticultural education and be eager to continue learning through field-based experience, collaboration, research and continuing education courses.
  • You must be able to identify plant pests, diseases and cultural stresses, evaluate the cause and plan the best course of action for resolution.
  • We are a small firm and do much of our own schlepping so it is necessary that candidates be able to lift 50lbs repeatedly, carry containerized plants and small trees, and perform other rigorous garden chores such as cultivating and amending soil.
