Freelance Maintenance Gardener: 2 days a week

Start Date: immediate  Compensation: $28-$32/hour

Wild Pistil Design Studio, a boutique urban garden design and maintenance firm is looking to hire an experienced gardener for part-time seasonal work which will run March-early December 2025. 

This is a great position for a creative freelance gardener with a reliable but flexible schedule. Your schedule will be 2 days per week and will fall within a Tuesday-Thursday window between the approximate hours of 9 am and 5 pm. We offer a friendly work environment and a competitive day-rate, with room for growth, commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Heavy lifting and willingness to work in all weather conditions
  • Work with team and under supervisor to carry out seasonal plant rotations. Includes soil amendment, planting and plant removals, fertilizing and mulching, among other tasks
  • Provide routine horticultural care for woody and herbaceous plant material in a range of settings from small private yards to expansive courtyards and rooftops. Requires proficiency in pest and disease id, transplanting/plant removals, weeding, pruning, watering and general clean up of hardscape and patio furnishings
  • Uphold high standard of order and tidiness on all job sites while working quickly and efficiently to complete tasks
  • Maintain courteous and professional behavior under pressure, and interact comfortably with clients, contractors and fellow gardeners

Qualifications/Requirements

  • At least 2+ years experience working in the residential NYC urban gardening sector, specifically as relates to maintenance, with an ability to provide strong references and demonstrated dependability.
  • Horticultural studies or related course work is preferred.
  • A valid drivers license, and a good sense of humor are required.
  • Ability to drive a cargo van and knowledge of automated irrigation systems are a plus.

We are looking for someone able to start working in March.
