Compensation: $23-$28 per hour

The Freelance Gardener is highly skilled in estate and urban fine gardening and deeply understands ornamental horticulture practices. The Freelance Garden works with JGG to enhance and maintain the beauty of our clients’ gardens and is offered a flexible schedule. Tools are provided. Travel is required to our service areas, primarily within but not limited to the Bronx and Manhattan.

Responsibilities/Duties

Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • Utilize your global understanding of client expectations, site requirements, and operational logistics to provide tailored horticultural solutions.
  • Perform a variety of gardening tasks at the highest standards, including planting, deadheading, weeding, mulching, pruning, and watering of display beds.
  • Care of greenhouse plants, including maintaining, watering, fertilizing, and pest control.
  • Accurately identify plant species, insects, and diseases to address any issues and ensure the health of the garden.
  • Prune shrubs and small trees following current arboriculture industry standards, ensuring optimal growth and appearance.
  • Operate and maintain hand-held power equipment such as blowers.
  • Follow safety guidelines for the use of chemicals (fertilizer, pest control, anti-desiccant spray) and the operation of equipment and tools.
  • Leave job sites in pristine condition upon task completion, ensuring a high level of client satisfaction.
  • Promptly report time and attendance, as well as any safety and operational needs to your direct supervisor.
  • Interact professionally with clients and the general public.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Proven experience as an ornamental horticulture consultant or in a similar role.
  • Degree or certification in horticulture or related field desired
  • Valid NYS driver's license preferred
  • Strong knowledge of local plant species, gardening techniques, and aesthetic presentation.
  • Expertise in local and ornamental plants, including tropical plants, vegetables, and herbs.
  • Ability to operate and maintain horticultural tools and equipment safely.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to high standards of work.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
  • Ability to work outdoor in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Presentable appearance
