Compensation: $22/hour

The equipment and irrigation technician is a Part Time or Full Time, seasonal position. This person will be responsible for operating and maintaining equipment both large (tractors, implements and vehicles) and small (mowers, string trimmers), in addition to installing, repairing, running, and uninstalling various types of irrigation equipment (drip, field sprinklers, and greenhouse sprinklers).

The following list encompasses most of our equipment:

  • Modern tractors (under 100HP)
  • An old cultivating tractor
  • Brush hog
  • Flail mower
  • Rear cultivators
  • Belly mounted Basket weeder
  • Belly mounted cultivators
  • Tine weeder
  • Chisel plow
  • Field cultivator
  • Water wheel transplanter
  • Seed drill
  • Harvest vehicles (two)
  • Potato digger

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Tractor Operation
    • Mowing, tillage, cultivation, transplanting, spreading of soil amendments, digging crops, moving and unloading of pallets with forks, scooping and spreading with the bucket, etc.
  • Production Record Keeping
    • Keep records required by organic certification: amendment/fertilizer applications, planting or seeding dates and locations, etc.
  • Equipment maintenance
    • Keep a maintenance schedule and log of all powered equipment.
      • Includes all fluids, filters, lubrication points, and tire pressure
      • Schedule maintenance operations such as filter and fluid changes
  • Irrigation
    • Setting up, operating, and repairing irrigation equipment as needed, in tunnels and in the field.
    • Fertigation

Qualifications/Requirements

Candidates should:

  • Have a driver’s license, and reliable transportation to/from work
  • Pay attention to detail
  • Communicate clearly with co-workers and managementHave experience and comfort with a wide range of hand and powered tools.
  • Have at least two seasons of tractor operation experience
  • Be comfortable/proficient in operating and maintaining a wide range of common farm equipment, including gas powered vehicles.
  • Be comfortable with common, minor repairs of the above equipment.
  • Know how to install seasonal irrigation equipment, including filters, timers, valves, hydrants, drip irrigation and sprinklers, and various kinds of PVC and hose fittings.
  • Know how to do all of the above safely and efficiently.

Additional Information

Treadlight Farm (est. 2015) is a certified-organic cut-flower farm and native plant plug nursery operating on 20 acres of fields at the Arrowhead Agricultural Center in Kerhonkson, NY. We grow annual, biennial, and perennial plants in our fields and greenhouses and sell cut flowers and nursery stock from March through November to wholesale customers in the Hudson Valley, Westchester and NYC.
