Contract Fine Urban Gardener

Start Date: 3/15/25  Compensation: $45-$50/hr

Birch and Basil Design seeks an exemplary contract fine gardener with superior horticultural skills and client interfacing capabilities. 

We are an award winning landscape design/build firm headquartered in Manhattan and run by a husband and wife team with over a dozen years of experience in this industry. We are presently looking to build out a best of class plant care and maintenance program that utilizes the very best gardeners we can find, who work with us on a contract basis for some of the highest hourly rates in the industry. 

We are looking for 1-2 talented horticulturists who are interested in:

  • Utilizing their horticultural skills on rooftop and terrace gardens in Manhattan;
  • Caring for gardens using only organic products and fertilizers, to build resilient plants, healthy soil and ecosystems;
  • Working with us 1-2 days a week to start in mid March;
  • Comfortable overseeing your own portfolio of gardens; working solo and managing your time and schedule;
  • Working directly with the owners and learning the ins and outs of the industry and business. 
  • All that goes into making a garden beautiful - from detailed pruning down to cleaning planters. 
  • You have at least a working knowledge of irrigation systems. Prefer comfort with making irrigation adjustments but willing to train the right candidate who is eager to learn. 
  • Being treated well with opportunities for continuing education and more.
  • $45-50/hr to start with performance based bonuses.

Responsibilities/Duties

How this will work:

  • You visit an average of 3 gardens per day for 1.5-2.5 hours per visit.
  • You keep in touch with us via smartphone and apps.
  • We won't waste your time in meetings or require you to work on installations-- this is a fine gardening position.
  • Should you be interested in assisting on our installations as well, we would be happy to provide additional days, but you are under no obligation to do so.

Qualifications/Requirements

For this to work:

  • You need to be a self starter with a strong work ethic and eye for details. You are the most outdoorsy person you know, who enjoys working with their hands outside in all weather conditions.
  • You enjoy keeping spaces clean and tidy.
  • You consider yourself to be mature, punctual, professional, honest, and trustworthy with a real passion for plants and the outdoors. If you have a great sense of humor, even better.
  • The team who works with us are primarily artists and horticulturists working in different mediums throughout NYC who enjoy this tangible, close to the earth work who don't necessarily want full time employment for various reasons.
