Hilltop Hanover Farm & Environmental Center seeks an Intern, funded by a generous grant from the Bedford Garden Club, to join our team. 

Hilltop Hanover Farm & Environmental Center is dedicated to the practices of sustainable agriculture, environmental stewardship, community education, and the creation of access to healthy food systems. Hilltop is a 60-acre working farm and educational center operated by Westchester County Parks, Recreation, and Conservation that uses organic practices to grow produce, flowers, and seeds for a market-style CSA, on-site farm stand, and native plant nursery. The farm offers educational programming throughout the year and the property is open to the public, free of charge, year round.

Internship Description
The Bedford Garden Club Intern will work under the supervision of the Farming Manager and the Native Plants Program Manager as part of our food production team and our native plants team.  Ideal candidate should love getting dirty and take pleasure in a hard day’s work! 

Position begins end of June and will run for approximately 8 weeks ending in August.  Intern to work 4 days per week.  Two days per week will be with our Food Production team and two days per week will be with our Native Plants team.  Not to exceed 200 total hours.  The default work schedule is 7:30AM to 3:30PM, with an hour unpaid lunch.   

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Work with skilled farmers to care for a wide range of crops on a farm that follows best organic practices.  Responsibilities include planting, watering, weeding, harvesting, washing, packing, and more.
  • Work with regionally recognized experts to grow native ecotype plants for seed production. Responsibilities include garden and field maintenance, planting, weeding, watering, pruning and more.  Intern will accompany our staff seed collector for at least one day of field work at another County park to learn about scouting and seed collection from wild populations of native plant species.
  • Produce a final report highlighting their work at the farm.  To be presented to Bedford Garden Club in person and used for Hilltop newsletters, social media posts, etc.
  • Help with other tasks around the farm as needed.

  • Ability to work in all weather conditions while maintaining self-awareness of personal needs and safety
  • Self-motivated
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Detail oriented
  • Ability to be flexible with daily tasks
  • Excellent communication skills, open to receiving feedback
  • Comfortably able to lift 40lbs
  • Interest in food, responsible farming practices, ecological gardening, conservation, and native plants
