Responsibilities/Duties
The Adult Education Program Manager directs and is chiefly responsible for a wide array of adult programming that advances the Gardens’ educational mission. They work to provide quality educational and wellness programs to diverse demographics, supporting general education programs, Certificate programs, and Advanced Studies programming. To round out our suite of adult programming, this position also oversees our Botanical Arts programs by supervising our Arts Coordinator, and our horticultural therapy programs by supervising our Horticultural Therapist. Working closely in collaboration with other mission-focused departments (Horticulture and Plant Science and Conservation), as well as the Marketing Department, this position sets the strategic direction for these programs and ensures all steps of their successful implementation.
In addition, the Program Manager works to develop and implement new strategies to support equity and inclusion in the Gardens’ programs, and to guide the growth of program initiatives over a multiyear timeframe. They work closely with other departments to facilitate the integration of program goals into operational plans, and work with the Horticulture and Plant Science & Conservation teams to integrate their mission-focused work into externally focused education programs. This position plays a key role in advancing Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens strategic priority of ensuring our public engagement, deepens participants’ appreciation of the natural world, and inspires action on climate change and conservation.
Qualifications/Requirements
- At least five years of demonstrated experience or training in adult education, program design and development, and program evaluation.
- Advanced education and/or significant practical experience in horticulture, botany, and/or landscape design/maintenance.
- Demonstrated experience and success managing and leading others.
- Must be comfortable interacting with guests, staff, board members, and the community, striving to exceed guest and program participant expectations and creating an exceptional experience while visiting the Gardens.
- Experience in collaborative project planning, stakeholder engagement, and partnership development.
- Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Must be enthusiastic about plants, conscientious of the environment, and be willing to participate in all horticultural best-management practices and organization events.
- Proficient in basic computer software such as Microsoft Office.
- Commitment to working across the organization to support the integration of IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility) principles into the Gardens’ internal operations and its relationships with visitors and guests.
