Invasive Plant Removal Techniques

Join Chris McArdle, invasive species specialist, ISA Certified Arborist, and deputy director of northern Manhattan parks for the New York Restoration Project to learn invasive plant ID and removal techniques. We will remove invasive plants from a reforestation site at Forest of Highbridge Park. Learn to ID some of NYC’s most invasive plants and non-chemical removal methods.

Preparation

  • Dress to work outdoors. Closed-toed sturdy shoes are recommended because we will be working on uneven surfaces. Clothing that covers your skin is also advised since we will be around thorny plants and skin-irritating vegetation.
  • We will meet at 9:30 and walk to the work site shortly after.
  • Supplies (gloves, tools, etc.) will be distributed upon arrival at the work site.
  • We will go over best management practices for invasive species removal and learn to ID numerous non-native invasive plants.
  • There will be a vehicle at the work site where you can lock your belongings.
  • This is a rain or shine event, so please come prepared. We will cancel only in case of lightning or a severe storm.
  • Parking is limited, so plan accordingly. Public transportation is recommended.
