Wayne Cahilly
Landscape Diagnostics (because not everything is a bug)

It seems that every year a new invasive insect assaults our carefully planned and managed landscapes: Asian Longhorn Beetle, Emerald Ash Borer, Spotted Lantern Fly, to name the most recent few. But more woody plants fail in the planted landscape, due to cultural conditions and mismanagement than are taken out by exotic bugs. Understanding the soil/root relationship, the need to plant correctly, select the right plant for the place, the role of irrigation both good and bad, and the ability to recognize plant stress before it becomes strain, are key to getting it right or correcting what begins to go bad.

Wayne’s talk will be a casual perambulation through the subject of cultural diagnostics, which should take a semester to teach but which seldom enters into conversation among professionals…unless preceded by the phrase “What do you think is wrong with my tree?”

Wayne Cahilly is an arborist with nearly forty years of experience in tree and shrub care. He has worked and taught at the New York Botanical Garden since the early 1980s and has operated Cahilly’s Horticultural Services, LLC since 1985. As a consultant who specializes in woody plant health, risk assessment, and failure analysis of fallen trees in legal matters, Wayne brings a unique set of skills and experience to the subject of Landscape Diagnostics. He enjoys teaching and a good mystery, so the question, “What’s wrong with my tree?” is an opening to teach plant culture and physiology to unsuspecting clients, attorneys, and juries!
Wayne is a member of the American Society of Consulting Arborists, is ISA certified, NJ Licensed Tree Expert, and is a Certified Tree Risk Assessor.
