In the wild, carnivorous plants grow in very limited habitats but they adapt surprisingly well to outdoor container gardening. Hardy pitcher plants, sundews, Venus flytraps and other carnivorous plants thrive in pots when provided with the proper cultural conditions. Grower and carnivorous plant expert Jonathan Kui reveals the fascinating adaptations of carnivorous plants, while showcasing a variety of live plants from his Manhattan-based nursery Midtown Carnivores. Learn about the specific requirements of these bog-dwelling plants, then plant up your own mini-bog to take home to your sunny balcony, terrace or backyard. Plants, pots and all supplies provided—just bring your curiosity and a sense of adventure! Ages 12 and older welcome with an adult.

Registration required, online or by calling 718.549.3200 x251.

Jonathan Kui is the proprietor of Midtown Carnivores, a carnivorous plant nursery and NYC retailer since 2013. As an avid carnivorous plant enthusiast, he has given carnivorous plant workshops to participants of all ages, with Brooklyn Public Library, the New York Hall of Science, Queens Botanical Garden, The Horticultural Society of New York and Kaleidoscope ECDC. During the day, he works as a forensic biologist and laboratory director, and was the director of the documentary film CAPTIVATED: THE ALLURE OF CARNIVOROUS PLANTS (2021).
