The Rake’s Progress: Experiments in Reconciling Plant Collecting and Design at Sakonnet

Sakonnet is a personal, experimental garden in Rhode Island set within a nativecoastal open fields landscape. John Gwynne shares how he seeks to blend the two often warring forces of obsessive plant collecting and design on a cottage garden scale. High stone walls and hedges enable microclimate manipulation for growing a wide plant palette, from blue poppies to zone 7 shrubs.

Trained as a landscape architect, John Gwynne headed the Wildlife Conservation Society’s renowned exhibits department at the Bronx Zoo and has worked on National Parks in Africa and South America.
