Plant Explorers & Plants We Know
Jennifer Bakshi

PLEASE NOTE: Registration is required to attend virtual meetings. Details below.

Jennifer Bakshi will explain the role of the plant hunter in relation to world exploration from 1500 - 1900. You will also hear some interesting and amazing stories of plant collectors who explored in Japan and China after 1900 and struggled to bring out plants that we now know and love. She will explain the significance of expedition sponsors and clarify the distinction between the person who discovers a given species, the person who is credited for bringing the plant into cultivation, the author of its name, and in whose honor the plant is named.

Jennifer Bakshi is a designer, manager and teacher who has built a thriving landscape design business, Urban Oasis Landscape Design. She teaches Botanical Latin and Botanical History at the New York Botanical Garden. Her success lies partially in her boundless enthusiasm for her work, be it design or teaching, with which she infects clients and students alike. She most recently participated in a podcast on Botanical Latin for Joe Lamp’l, host and producer of the PBS show, Growing a Greener World. Jennifer holds an MBA from Rutgers University, a BA from Beloit College, and Certification in Landscape Design and Horticulture from NYBG.
