We’re Not in Kansas Any More

When we grow unusual plants, we instinctively try to recreate their (supposed) native environments. Ellen Hornig believes that in actual practice, we almost never succeed, yet many of the plants still do well in our gardens. Ellen will discuss plant adaptability and share some of the unlikely plants she grows in her Oswego garden, including lesser-known US native, South African and Himalayan plants, and plants from southern Europe.

Ellen Hornig is the owner of Seneca Hill Perennials, near Oswego, New York. Since 1998, she has devoted herself full-time to developing the nursery. Specialties include hardy plants from the Drakensberg in South Africa, species peony, hardy cyclamen, a growing collection of Asclepia, as well as a various breeding and selection programs.
