History of the Manor House Porches

In 1884, Mr. Cutting purchased the 931- acre estate of George Loralliard. In 1885, Mr. Cutting engaged architect Charles. C. Haight to design and build his country house. It was completed in 1886. An integral part of the design revolved around the view and afternoon breezes of the Connetquot River. To take advantage of this, two expansive porches were constructed on the southerly side of the house. One hundred thirty years later, the porches had fallen into disrepair and necessitated full restoration. Much of the $180,000 project cost cost was paid for by monies raised by events such as the annual cocktail party.

Restoration of the 2nd Floor Hallway and “Office”

To cool the house, a very large exhaust fan was installed in a former office on the second floor. The design allowed cool air to be pulled from the south side of the house and exhausted out the North side. Since the original drawings show this room as an “office”, we are not certain when the fan was added. Arboretum staff, volunteers, and regional maintenance craftsman worked to remove the fan, restore the room and walls, remove the carpet in the stairs and hallway, as well as sand, stain and polyurethane the floors.

Art Exhibition: Ned Butterfield

Ned Butterfield, a graduate of the Pratt Institute Fine Arts Program, has completed a long career as a freelance illustrator supplying artwork for the New York City advertising and editorial markets. Now working from his home in Islip, NY, Ned creates richly detailed watercolor feature beaches and lighthouses, canals and shipyards.

Fine Art Artist, Ron Becker, works in oils and acrylics striving to portray nature in such a way that the viewer wants to enter the scene he has painted.
Master Watercolorist, Ned Butterfield paints richly detailed watercolors of seascapes and landscapes of Long Island’s South Shore.
Gail Neuman has been creating one-of-a-kind beaded and metalsmith jewelry throughout the country for twenty years.
