Head Injury Association- Commack, NY

The Head Injury Association, located in Commack, is a not-for-profit organization committed to increasing public awareness of traumatic brain injury and its consequences. Our mission is to maximize Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) survivors’ potential by providing the necessary residential and support programs to help them achieve four valued outcomes: Individualization, Independence, Integration and Productivity.

In addition to our standing yoga, tai chi, art, and other disciplines; HIA is in the process of developing a Horticulture Program that will provide therapy and enjoyment to our survivors. We are looking for an instructor with the enthusiasm to build this program from the ground up and the skills and patience to instruct our consumers in horticulture and plant-related projects. Since this is a new program, the ideal candidate will have the opportunity to really develop it as their own.

This is a full-time position with medical benefits and a retirement plan. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining the growing room plant material and hard goods
  • Developing organized lesson plans that can be tailored to a broad audience
  • Instructing survivors with patience in the field of Horticulture


Candidates must have the following qualifications:

  • A strong work ethic
  • A two-year degree in Horticulture or Plant Science or 6+ years practical experience
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Patience
  • A desire to improve the lives of TBI survivors
